Politics and strive

Politics is a scary thing to grapple with. By politics, I don't mean those concerning elections, presidents, prime ministers and such. I was referring more to internal politics within an organization, be it the office, school, classroom, etc. I guess all these are inevitable due to the very nature of humans. Man have, for a long time, had the tendency to be biased in his judgment. More often than not, we are inclined, be it consciously or subconsciously, to overlook our own faults and rather, point the finger at someone else instead. I suppose it's that innate self-centeredness that all of us are born with. It's hard not to put our own interests first before all else. That does not mean I'm condoning such ego-centric behavior. I believe everyone has the capacity for change. Unfortunately, not everyone utilizes it wisely. These people are either pathologically narcissistic, or just plain stubborn and believe themselves to be superior as compared to others. It's these people who are generally responsible for all the internal politics because they are quick to find fault with others, yet are blind to their own shortcomings.


In school, politics are as rampant as within the workplace. For instance, in every class, there are bound to be that handful of students who are more apt to voice their opinions, however ridiculous or redundant, and it's usually these people who generally do not process anything in those thick skulls of theirs before blithering away. Although being opinionated is a good thing, too much of a good thing isn't spectacular either. Like how this one guy bears a certain grudge against one of my lecturers because they kind of got off on the wrong foot. Apparently he didn't do his work properly, and obviously my lecturer wasn't pleased. So this one guy started his personal vendetta against the lecturer by nitpicking on every single thing that the lecturer does and says, and finally blowing something so trivial to such epic proportions when he wanted to call for a class meeting to find out every single person's opinions about the lecturer and how he can make a case out of it. Mental I tell you. One would think that we, as students, would barely have time to breathe under all the workload but nooo, they had to go around campaigning for student rights as well. I guess I got slightly miffed at how self-righteous this guy was portraying himself to be.


In a tertiary institution, students are expected to carry out their own research on things which are not covered during classes and which are easy enough for them to study up on their own. But there are people who expect to be spoonfed while they sit idlely by and wait for the information to fall into their laps. These people can generally be split into 2 categories: Those who do not possess the mental capacity to absorb information on their own, and those who are just downright lazy. However, one can be certain that a number of students will accuse the lecturer of not teaching everything he should have. I'm amazed at the sheer absurdity of it all. I guess nothing can sway a person's judgment the moment he decides to be biased against someone else. But it is just plain rude of him to constantly mock everything the lecturer says and does in class. I consider it absurd that the student does not even attempt to understand what the lecturer is trying to explain because he has already decided that he does not want to listen to it, and then he dares to turn around and accuse the lecturer of being a poor teacher. Self-centeredness is inherent here because the student wants things to be catered to his every whim and fancy, and he disregards what other people are trying to do around him. He wants everything tailormade to his satisfaction, and he usually has a warped sense of logic and reasoning which is beyond normal human comprehension, but understood only by him, and those who are like-minded. These people then try to stir up animosity towards their object of dislike. Respect for people of authority is never in their vocabulary.


Sometimes, one wonders what is the best way to put up with these people. Do we try to stop them, while at the same time arguing against their warped sense of logic? Or do we leave them to their own devices while we concentrate on more important matters? Sadly, internal politics is something which cannot be gotten rid of. For every good thing, there is always a downside, like how there are two sides to a coin. All we can do is to hope that someday, these people will receive a wakeup call to slap them back to the reality that the world does not revolve around them, and that there are many other people inhabiting the same Earth and breathing in the same air as they do, and that they are not the only ones living here.
