In the past, you know how people used to come up with remedies for all sorts of ailments ranging from the normal to the downright weird? I've managed to find a few that elicited a "WHAT?! BLIMEY!!!" from me so here goes:
1. In the 17th century, people cured pimples by taking two puppies, cutting off their heads, and collecting their blood (poor pooches).
2. In the old wild west, alcohol-swilling cowboys cured their morning hangovers by drinking a tea made from dried rabbit droppings (Yucks).
3. In Puerto Rico, people rub lemons under their drinking arms to cure their hangovers.
4. It used to be said that whenever you have a headache, you should swim upside down in boiling water for 30 seconds (I don't know which will kill you first...the boiling water, or the stupidity of it all).
5. In the old days, the Native Indians came up with this idea that the "voices" some people hear in their heads, were voices of evil spirits that entered the body from a battle wound. In order to cleanse the body of "evil spirits", they would cut open the "infected" person, reach for his heart and rip it out, and chant something like "waaa waaa waaa" while holding it high up in the air before placing it back into the body. If the person didn't get up from the table, the gods could not save him/her, and if they did wake up, the gods were merciful and cleansed them from the "evil spirits" (I think the gods must not have loved any of them because anyone knows that if you don't have a heart, you die shortly).
6. In the past when you came down with a cold, people in the Baltic areas take a large potato, go into their backyards in their underwear and shoes only, and bury the potato using a pick and a shovel by the light of the moon.
7. When you have a wart, prick the wart with a pin and stick the pin into an ash tree while reciting the rhyme, "Ashen tree, ashen tree, pray buy these warts from me". The warts will then be tranferred to the tree.
8. In the late 19th century, sleeping on stones was said to cure baldness.
9. In Penmyndd, Wales, an ointment made from the scrapings from a 14th century tomb was very popular for eye treatment (and the possibility of seeing dead Mr./Ms. 14th century is a plus?).
10. In Jamestown, people tied fish to the soles of their feet to cure a fever (so you don't walk around, you squelch around).
